My Reflection
The course Educational Technology is an interesting one which gives an in-depth look at the various devices and tools that one can use to enhance the teaching/ learning process. Educational technology also known as Ed Tech is the effective use of technological tools in learning. A variety of technological tools are used in the promotion of education, these tools include media, machines and networking hardware. Educational technology is not limited and as such it includes, e-learning, instructional technology and information and communication technology (ICT) in education. The course also required me to be informed about the different learning theories, how technology can be integrated into them and to select a theory I thought was most suitable for the classroom. These theories include Behaviourism, Cognitivism, Constructivism, Engagement Theory, Situated Cognition and Distributed Learning. the course also took me out of my comfort zone and had me use technology to create a concept map, something I had never done before. Though I found the task difficult I was able to recognize how concept maps can be used to present information and how I can display one to my students and have them create one on their own.
In the course I was also introduced to the article “Our Brains Extended” by Marc Prenksy. The article spoke of the new curriculum where students are introduced to technology at an early age and where the focus is geared towards three (3) crucial areas: effective thinking, effective actions and effective relationships. I wasn’t aware that there were specific models that can be used to integrate technology in the classroom, the introduction of the ASSURE and ADDIE gave me a clearer understanding of how to effectively integrate technology in the classroom. Though I was aware that that technology is being integrated into education I wasn’t aware of trends in educational technology. These trends include flipped learning, device agnostic learning, mobile learning and personalized blended learning.
This course provided me with a wealth of information that I will be able to use in the future. I was introduced to various tools that I wasn’t aware of. The information gathered from this course will be extremely beneficial for me as I enter into the education system as well informed teacher.
